Adventurers,
The Great Expedition has begun. Take to the seas in new boats, discover new areas or barter your way from rags to riches in this vast ocean content update! Find out more about what is in store below.
The Great Expedition
Sailors are gathered at the taverns and inns of Velia and Port Epheria, looking for captains to head out to the great open seas. On the islands, Papu and Otter Barterers are in position, competing against each other for resources and the attention of bartering Adventurers. People adrift in the Margoria sea, each with their own tales and sunken treasures are all looking to passing boats for rescue. The island of Oquilla’s Eye has also made news recently as unfamiliar tidal currents are spewing from the island, displacing the great ocean creatures into unfamiliar territories. Welcome to the Great Expedition.
● Barterers, NPCs drifting around Margoria, and Oquilla’s Eye NPCs and related knowledge categories have been added.
Bartering
● Bartering, where you can negotiate trades through your ships, has been added.
Bartering, a primitive method of trade where goods are moved from one location to another, is being introduced. This is to focus on a different kind of fun instead of the older method of trade where you would simply aim for profit margins through the difference in item prices.
At first, Bartering was designed to only progress as a captain out at sea and not have any currency value on land. However, Adventurers gave feedback that they would prefer activities that connect the ocean and land worlds of Black Desert organically.
From now on, trade goods that were not traded as much on land will find new value through Bartering. Additionally, you can also obtain a brand new type of currency in Black Desert by reaching the final goals of Bartering - ‘Crow Coins’. This currency was spread by a secretive organization, but it is known to bring great riches and glory to those that gather them.
- Bartering is available through Papu and Otter Barterers on islands, and drifting sailors in Margoria. If the required items are stowed within the holds of your ship, they will automatically be exchanged and loaded.
(Please note, items in your character’s Inventory cannot be used to barter.)
● Bartering is done by using Parley Points.
- Each Barter requires different amounts of Parley Points. If you do not have enough Parley Points, you will not be able to Barter for that item.
- Each Barter cycle starts you with 1,000,000 Parley Points and when the Barter Information is renewed, your Parley Points are restored.
- Higher Trade levels reduce the amount of Parley Points required to perform Barters.
Ex.) Beginer Lv.1 requires 14,286 Parley Points → Apprentice Lv.1 requires 13,074 Parley Points
● Items that restore Parley Points have been added to the game.
- Manufacturing an ‘Item Collection Increase Scroll (60 min)’ will guarantee 1 ‘Crow's Trade Voucher‘.
※ However, Manufacturing an ‘[Event] Item Collection Increase Scroll (60 min)’ will not yield a ‘Crow’s Trade Voucher’.
- 'Crow’s Trade Voucher’ restores 250,000 Parley Points.
- You cannot exceed 1,000,000 Parley Points.
- ‘Crow’s Trade Voucher’ has a cooldown of 4 hours once used.
- The following Bartering chains happen across all island nodes out at sea.

● While Bartering, Special Bartering offers can become available at a low chance through Barterer NPCs on each of the islands.
● Special Barters are event-like Barters that are made available through chance during regular Bartering. They appear with a lower chance compared to regular Barters, but Special Bartering allows you to Barter for expensive items or large sums of Crow Coins.
- The more you repeatedly Barter, the more probability you have of Special Barters becoming available.
- If you barter Gold Bars through Special Bartering, you will be able to earn Crow Coins or expensive items that cannot be obtained through regular Bartering.
- You must arrive at the island to know what item you will get from Special Barter.

New Ships, Equipment and Functions
● The Epheria Cog has been added.
- This ship has a high base speed, but is vulnerable against Sea Monster threats due to it’s low durability.
- The skill ‘Breezy Sail’ is a standard skill for this ship.
- Once the Cog’s lifespan has expired, the speed will drop considerably and it will become difficult to use.
● The Epheria Cog can be crafted in one of two ways.

● The Bartali Sailboat, that can be purchased from Proix at the Dancing Marlin Tavern in Velia, can now be upgraded to the Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate through the Upgrade system. Ships can be upgraded by interacting with the Wharf Manager, then selecting the ship you want to upgrade.
Previously, workers would build ships for you using the materials you have worked hard to gather. The arrival of new ships would be great news, but there is that part of many Adventurers who would be worried about gathering all the materials required to craft them. There are also those who would be discouraged when finding out that there is a possibility of older ships that they worked so hard to obtain become defunct. That is why we introduced the Upgrade system, allowing the new ships to be created using the pre-existing ships.
● Bartali Sailboats can be upgraded with the following materials.
※ Khan will be released in a future update. However, Khan’s Scale and Khan’s Tendon are currently available via the Crow Coin Shop and Bartering.

- Epheria Carrack Parts Upgrade Permits can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi at Port Epheria.
● The Improved Epheria Sailboat, Improved Epheria Frigate, Epheria Caravel, Epheria Galleass and the Epheria Carracks all have access to the new ‘Volley Skill.’
- Volley is a skill which allows you to shoot your cannons from the left or right side of the ship while behind the wheel of the ship.
- Volley is available from Sailing Beginner 1.
- The Volley skill has different Cooldowns depending on the ship.
● The Improved Epheria Sailboat, Improved Epheria Frigate, Epheria Caravel, Epheria Galleass and the Epheria Carracks all have access to FocusFire.
- Converting to FocusFire mode will completely change the field of vision, allowing for a more accurate Cannon bombardment.
- You can fire faster and farther in FocusFire.
- You can use FocusFire with other ship skills, except for during the Ram skill.
● The following inputs are used during FocusFire.
Left Side FocusFire |
Right Side FocusFire |
L1/LB button will activate FocusFire to the left. Pressing the L1/LB button again will switch to regular view. X/A buttons will switch straight to the regular view. □/X will switch straight to the right side of the ship. R1/RBwill fire the cannons on the side you are looking through with FocusFire. |
□/X button will activate FocusFire to the right. Pressing the □/X button once more will switch to your normal view. X/A will quickly exit the FocusFire view. L1/LB will switch to the left side of the ship. R1/RB will fire the cannons on the sire you are looking through with FocusFire. |
* Focus Fire can be used with the following ships:
- Epheria Carrack
- Epheria Galleass
- Epheria Caravel
- Improved Epheria Sailboat
- Improved Epheria Frigate
● The reload time for cannons on both Port and Starboard are separate.
- This means you can shoot the cannons on the port side, then fire immediately on the Starboard side.
● The cannons on both the Port and Starboard side can be fired simultaneously
- However in Focus Mode, only one side can be fired at a time.
Note: Upgrading to a ship with the Volley skill will mean that manual use of the cannons is unavailable.
● The following ships are now considered Large Ships:
- Guild Galley, Epheria Sailboat, Improved Epheria Sailboat, Epheria Frigate, Improved Epheria Frigate, Bartali Sailboat, Epheria Caravel, Epheria Galleass, Epheria Carrack (all versions)
● When a Large Ship is destroyed, or remotely collected, normal items are not destroyed.
- However all Barter Items will be destroyed.
- Trade Items with a chance to be destroyed upon death will still have a chance to be destroyed.
● The damage system which applies to Guild Galleys, Epheria Sailboats and Epheria Frigates also applies to other Large Ships.
- Ships will receive 10% damage to durability each time they are destroyed. If their durability reaches 100% loss, you can no longer use the ships.
- You can use the Restore function at a Wharf Manager to recover ships. The cost of restoring damage requires Silver, and may vary depending on the ship.
● The ‘Anchor’ UI will activate when you approach a Papu or Otter Barterer on an island while you are on your ship.
- Anchor: Displays the options available for the island.
- Explore/Supply: Send sailors to the island to either explore or pick up supplies.
- Barter: Offer Barters to the barterer.
● Pressing the Anchor button will cause the ship to stop in place. The ship cannot move again until the Depart function has been selected.
● Explore and Supply are functions that use sailors. You must have at least 1 sailor for these functions to be used.
● Explore and Supply are available on certain islands in the great ocean.
- You can supply the rations you have on your ship with Supply, or find treasures with Explore.
- In order to Explore or Supply, you need to have at least 100,000 Rations loaded onto the ship.
- If your rations are equal to or less than 100,000, you will not be able to use these options.
- Explore and Supply share a 20 minute cooldown. If you use Explore on one island, you will be unable to use the supply function for 20 minutes.
● Explore can occasionally start automatically while sailing.
- This can only happen if you have at least 1 sailor on board.
- The effects of Explore are as follows
* Rations Increase/Decrease
* Ship HP Increase/ Decrease
* Sailor Condition Recover/Decrease
* Item Obtained/Quest Received
※ Unlike the Explore option on islands, rations will not be consumed.
Sailors
● Sailors can now be hired to work on your large ships.
- You must complete the quest line ‘[The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye’ in order to hire sailors. This questline appears in your Suggested quest tab.
- You can hire sailors from Illiya Island, Lunar Halo Inn in Velia, and the shores of Port Epheria.
- In order to hire a sailor, you will need to purchase a Sailor Contract Certificate.
- Sailor Contract Certificates cost 3,000,000 silver, and can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi of Port Epheria, Islin Bartali in Velia or from Proix in the Dancing Marlin Tavern in Velia. You can also purchase them from Wharf managers.
● Different Sailors provide different effects to your ship. Some will provide offensive boosts, some will provide speed and turning boosts. Find the right sailor set up for your ship.
- Sailors consume Cabin Space on Large Ships. The weight of Sailors is also calculated in your current boat’s weight limit.
● Sailors will gain EXP when killing Sea Monsters or when Bartering/ Special Bartering.
- Sailor EXP is increased depending on the number of Sailors on your ship:
Number of Sailors |
Total Acquired EXP |
1 |
100% |
2~3 |
120% |
4~5 |
140% |
6~7 |
160% |
8~10 |
180% |
For example, if you have 4 sailors, each sailor will receive 35% of the EXP gained.
● For more information about Boats and Sailors, check out our GM Note.
Sailors Condition and Sickness
● Large Ships need food to keep the workers happy. You will need to resupply your ships with rations when docked at a Wharf Manager. Depleting your ration stock will cause the boat to slow down and skills will be unavailable.
● If all the rations on a ship have been consumed, your sailors will lose their condition. If their condition gets too low, there is the chance of them getting sick.
- The health of sailors who are not sick can be restored through their favorite food, Chowder.
- Chowder can be produced in a residence using a Cooking Utensil.
Food |
Recipe |
Chowder |
Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x 1 Milk x 1 Pepper x 2 Pork x 2 Teff Bread x 1 |
- Chowder restores a Sailors condition by +100
- If Chowder is unavailable, Raisin Bread can be purchased from Islin Bartali in Velia, or from Wharf Managers the world over.
● If a sailor’s condition gets too low, they will get sick and their effects to the boat will no longer apply.
● Sailors that are sick will not recover their stamina over time.
● The Alchemist Alustin has created a potion that can cure the sickness of sailors.
- The Elixir of Regeneration can be created to cure Sailor Sickness through Simple Alchemy.

Boatmen and Special Sailors
● Guild Galleys and Epheria Sailboats/Frigates can be equipped with 1 Sailor or Boatman, depending on which type of boat used.
- Special Sailors are equipped to Guild Galleys, Boatmen are equipped to Epheria Sailboats and Frigates.
- Only 1 can be used on a ship at a time.
● Guild Galley sailors can be purchased from a Guild Wharf Manager NPC for 2,500,000 Silver and can only be equipped by Guild Leaders.
● Boatmen on Epheria Ships can be purchased for 1,000,000 Silver and 500 Amity from one of 4 NPCs.
● These can be upgraded for the cost of 1000 Amity with Dichzy Borne for Guild Sailors, and Philaberto Falasi for Boatman Upgrades.
● Once they are upgraded, their contract is good for 7 days. Contract renewals last 1 day, and can be extended up to 7 times. To renew, talk to Tirol at Dias Farm.
Oquilla’s Eye – New Island to Explore
● A strange natural phenomenon occurs at Oquilla’s Eye every 3 hours. Many say they have witnessed an enormous water sprout rising from the center of the island. The sheer power of the water is said to be enough to severely injure even the thickest-skinned Adventurers. Whenever this occurs, treasures that were buried deep in the waters are said to appear.
- When Oquilla’s Eye is ready to spout, the message, ‘Something strange is going on in the eye of the Great Ocean.’ If your character is nearby, the force of the spout will be enough to kill you. There are no penalties if you die to the water spout.
- The water spout causes three large explosions, and various types of treasure chests will appear. These chests can be opened using one Silver Key.
